HYBRID VESSELS

Hybrid vessels are formed using a unique making process that combines the traditional ceramic technique of slip-casting and throwing. A few key marks are made onto the casting surface of a plaster mould before a cast is taken. On the wheel, a thrown top section is added to the still-moulded cast and fully thrown out. The presence of the mould allows the formation of a line of clay that accentuates the join and breaks away in pleasingly irregular fragments as the piece shrinks and pulls inwards. The rim of the form is cut, and later polished, to a subtle asymmetry.

Hybrid Vessels are made in two shapes - softly curving Elliptoid Vessels and the lower, sharper, Angled Vessels. Each form is available in several sizes, please see below for dimensions and prices.

These pieces are intended as sculptural pieces and are not suitable for domestic use.

PRINT CERAMICS

These pieces use the porous surface of plaster moulds to build up layers of printed, poured and brushed-on casting slips. The overlaid marks are incorporated into the slip-cast form and, after careful polishing, the surface of the piece is built up further with engobes and underglaze pigments. A clear glaze finishes the inside of the form and adds delicate areas of shine to the outer surface. The vessels are frequently developed and grouped together in careful compositions.

These pieces are cast in white earthenware and are partially unglazed. They are intended as sculptural pieces and are not suitable for domestic use.

CLAY COMPOSITIONS

These wall mounted artworks celebrate the ceramic practice of extensive material testing and document an exploration of clay surface possibilities. They are inspired by the systematic record keeping essential to the process of ceramics and are the result of wide experimentation within a heavily restricted range of ceramic materials. Fine layers of slips, washes of stains and subtly tinted glazes are layered upon the tile surface creating visual catalogues of diffuse transitions.

I have become increasingly interested in ideas of test and record over the last few years and through this work I hope to bring to prominence the careful, ordered investigations that invisibly underpin ceramic surfaces.

These pieces come in a variety of formats, but broadly divide into the single, compositional sketches of Clay Studies and the subtly graded colour palettes of Clay Catalogues. They are made in a variety of sizes and formats, please see below for an indication of price.
