Statement Commissions:

'A Material Palette': £18,000  (available)
White and black clay, white and black stain, clear glaze. Digital print on paper.

A pair of large, wall mounted works relate an arrangement of hundreds of small clay test tiles to their corresponding reference codes. The codes, written on the reverse of every tile, are the link between each ceramic unit of information and the written record of its making.

These tests are the result of wide experimentation with heavily restricted ceramic materials. They demonstrate the ceramic surface subtleties and range that can be achieved within strict parameters by flexing variables such as pigment concentration, thickness of application and firing temperature. Fine layers of slips, washes of stains and subtly tinted glazes are layered within the tile surface creating a visual catalogue of graduated, diffuse transitions.

Framed test tile work (100cm wide X 150cm tall). Framed paper work (100cm wide X 150cm tall).  Made for the British Ceramics Biennial 2019.

'A Record of Sorts': £21,000  (available)
White and black clay, white and black underglaze, clear glaze. Wood framed canvas with paint, pastel, pencil and digital print.

A collection of cylinder vessels and a canvas diptych draw together ideas of test, record and process in this artwork. The simple, finely considered clay forms present rich ceramic surfaces that are built upon both the technical data and the compositional, aesthetic concerns generated by a rigorous testing regime.

The ceramic materials used throughout the piece are limited to five; a white clay, a black clay, a white and black stain and a single clear glaze. Through extensive layered combinations, this ‘monochrome’ palette is brought alive with subtle colours, highlighting the immense versatility of clay pigments.

Framed diptych (250cm wide X 100cm tall). Three Small Cylinder Vessels (14cm diameter X 10-14 cm tall). Two Medium Cylinder Vessels (21cm diameter X 19 cm tall). Two Large Cylinder Vessels (28cm diameter X 28cm tall). Two Statement Cylinder Vessels (42cm diameter X 42cm tall). Made for the British Ceramics Biennial 2019.
